Lopez (2011)

Cher (1970s)

Jennifer Lopez can do no wrong in fashion. She is super stylish and even when she gets it wrong at times, she is still gorgeous! I just love how she wears her hair differently each time to complement her dressing. With the trends going back to the swinging 60′s and hippie 70′s, hair bands, floppy hats and head scarves are very hip right now. Jennifer Lopez certainly knows how to work it and make it look current. If you have an oval face shape like Jennifer, you will look good in almost any hairstyles and accessories. If your face is oblong (longer than wider) like Cher, then pull the head scarf close to your brows to shorten your face length. Round faces and broad foreheads should avoid this style. The other hot trend is wide hairband. Jennifer’s rounded forehead was highlighted by the round edge of the hairband. It would have been better if she had some fringe sweeping at one side of her face. If you have a square face shape, the roundness of the hairband would soften your straight angular shape which could be flattering. Again, this look is not recommended for those with rounder and heart face shapes.Wearing a sparkly hair clip (see Jennifer- bottom) would off set your round or wide forehead and draw the eyes upward diagonally, thus creating a slimming effect.

Knee Highs

IMG_0577One of the spring/summer 2010 trends is knee high or over the knee socks. In the fashion world, there are no rules. While I encourage people to be more bold and adventurous in expressing their personalities through their dressing styles, this is one trend that I foresee will become a major faux pas if not worn correctly. So let me share some pointers on how to add this fashion statement to your wardrobe. Knee high socks will add width and bulk to an already bulky thigh, so choose them in light weight material and below the knee style to give a slimming effect. If you live in colder climate, you can do layering i.e. tights over socks over knee high boots. If you are petite and below 5′ 2″, show some skin to elongate legs by pairing knee high socks with short skirts (see photo) or hot pants which is very trendy now. Dark colours always give a slimming effect. For an edgy look, wear fishnet stockings with knee high socks and ankle boots.

Old World Civility – The Bow Tie

In a recent Urban Article, it noted that more menswear labels were stocking up on bow ties as demand for the much misunderstood male fashion accessory has risen.  Men’s fashion magazine GQ has endorsed the bow tie as a watch-out-for accessory this year. When you think of bow ties, you tend to associate it with black tie dinners, academics and surgeons…or the nerdy! However, with young Hollywood such as Kevin Jonas of the Jonas Brothers pop trio, male cast of Mad Men and Gossip Girls wearing bow ties as a whimsical alternative to their distressed jeans and casual jackets, the bow tie has suddenly become cool! Not to be outdone by the boys, pop sensation Rihanna and actress Diane Kruger were spotted donning the more elegant bow tie.

For a day look, go for printed or bold colour bow ties to go with your deep V-neck cardigans, casual shirts and blazers. Let your bow tie be the focal point and keep the rest of your outfit clean and lean. Otherwise, you may end up looking more clownish than collegiate! The bolder the bow tie, the better it is for daywear. I found some really whimsical bow ties made out of vintage ties at “Forget-Me-Not” in Anchor Point. They are really fun and attention-grabbing! Pin it onto your denim blazer or your bag for some spunk.
