Summer must-have footwear

Must-have slippers!

Looking for comfortable yet stylish flats? Riccino (www.riccino.com.sg) has a good range of flats in patent, matte and printed leather. My favourite is the T-strap flats; I’ve got them in suede, matte finishing and red patent leather with leopard print sole! The latter goes fabulously with my leopard print dress. They are stylish and oh, so comfortable that I guarantee you will not want to take them off! The T-strap style is also classic, so it is always trendy. It is a great summer footwear staple! Instead of pumps or wedges, wear these flats with your long skirts, fun dresses and cropped pants. I would not recommend it for dress down days at work as it is too casual although it beats those havianas or aunty looking sandals anytime:-)

Summertime Must-haves

Cool aides for summertime

Cool aides for summertime by melissa151065 featuring cotton blouses

When I walked into Zara yesterday, I immediately felt a sense of serenity, gentleness and restfulness. No, I am not referring to its customer service! (Note: Zara received poor ratings during a recent mystery shopping test in Singapore and its management is looking towards improvement measures.) It is summer fashion time and just about every store you walk into now are filled with racks of  pastel floral dresses and white shorts, evoking a genteel and sweet atmosphere. Such is the nature of the summer season palette; delicate, fragile, soft and muted. You will see a lot of small wild flower prints, wood sandals, straw tote bags and denim shorts in an array of colours. The summer girl style is definitely girly, charming, a bit country, flowy soft fabrics and quiet colours like whites, grays, baby blues, lilac and sweet pink. So what are this summer’s must-haves? Here’s my top ten:

  1. Long skirt
  2. Denim shorts
  3. Loose cotton denim shirt
  4. Straw tote bag
  5. Floppy hat
  6. Floral scarf
  7. Skinny leather belt
  8. Wedges/Wooden sandals
  9. Eyelet dress
  10. Peasant blouse

Do you have any favourite summer must-haves?

Sweet Romantics

One can never say no to flowers. So when I was checking out the bazaar at Orchard Central last weekend, I simply could not resist stopping by a booth that was fully laid out with the prettiest display of floral and vintage inspired necklaces. The beautiful creations were carefully handcrafted by Serene, owner of Serenite Designs. The style is elegant, pretty and feminine. Reminds me of Miriam Haskell’s creations (see below), one of my favourite costume jewelry designer from the 1920′s.

Necklace by Miriam Haskell

Serene explained that each piece is specially handcrafted by her and she combined vintage costume jewelry with modern beads. For example, the yellow beaded necklace I bought; the pendant was actually a vintage earring. I just love the vibrant colours and vintage look and it is easy to wear with skirts, dresses and jeans. There is also an array of pastel coloured rose pendants mixed with howlite beads. I got this charming piece which is a coral peach rose pendant with turquoise beads and a little bird charm; perfect for my summer dresses. You can also order custom-made pieces and even bring your own vintage collection for Serene to turn it into a personalised costume jewelry. For more information, visit www.serenitedesigns.etsy.com.

All Clogged Up!

Start off on the right foot with this spring/summer’s hot new trend: clogs! The new runway version comes in higher heels for a sleeker look.

chanel_clogs_m

Clogs have been around for ages and they were a popular footwear during the hippie era in the 1970′s. For an updated look, wear it with minis, tailored shorts, rolled up jeans or cropped pants. Go for a neutral colour like beige, black or brown. I personally find it cute and comfortable but if you are not sure about the high heel, go for one that is more comfortable for your liking like this pair (bottom, right) I got from Quintessential (SGD$130).

You can wear it simply as a strapless dress, pile on huge statement necklaces (clear crystal rocks with this dress!), as a halter or as a skirt! The sash can be tied in front, behind or across one shoulder for the latest runway look. That is not all. The hemline is tied up to create a pouf style; you can untie the ribbons underneath and let the hemline hang straight! Amazing and all these style variations for just under SGD$30!!!
