Instant Style – The T-Shirt Dress
Hollywood’s A-listers, including socialite Nicki Hilton are stepping out in this summer’s hot trend; the US$49.90 striped T-shirt dress from Express. The T-shirt dress is a no-brainer when you want comfort and style. Here are some tips to style up your T-shirt dress:
- Choose a quality cotton knit one that skims your body. Baggy shapes will make you look frumpy and tight ones look trashy!
- For a more fitted look, wear thin belts or opt for a loose hipster drawstring dress.
- Horizontal stripes widens the body, so if you are figure-conscious, go for diagonal stripes.
- Keep to minimal accessories like large hoop earrings (see Zoe’s) or long pendant necklaces.
- Wear casual sandals, wedges, oxfords or loafers.
- Cross body bags (see Zoe’s) and totes complete this easy summer style.
I saw some pretty cute striped T-shirt dresses at Japanese brands, Rose Bullet and Drip Drops at Isetan:-)
Summer’s Hot Accessories
- Stacked bangles and long multi-chain necklaces for a bohemian look. The more, the merrier. Pair up the same materials and weight together e.g. metal bracelets and chains, wood and rope, beads and resin. A simple flowy blouse and floral shorts completes your boho style.
- Straw fedora and fringed cape adds visual interest to a plain tank top and maxi skirt. Keep colours neutral for a cool and chic look.
- Colourful wedges and tote bag instantly brightens up your neutral summer palette. These accessories will go well with long white dresses, denim shirts and stripe tees.
Gone Knots!
Summer Lovin’
Flow into summer with this season’s favourite trend, the maxi dress. Dresses are great for beating the heat as they are light and airy! Hollywood celebrities are also spotted wearing maxi dresses with denim or leather cropped jackets. This makes the otherwise romantic girly look more chic. But with temperatures soaring to 34 degree Celsius in Singapore, this jacket trend will not work! Opt for a vest (check out Robinsons!) and/or a lightweight cotton scarf instead as you can still look chic and not sweat. And if it gets too warm, you can tuck them away into your bag without having to arm carry it unlike a jacket. Put on a cute fedora and colourful flats and you will be as “Hot” as summer!

Pop of Colour
Summer trend is here and the way to perk up your day in this hot and sunny weather is to add a pop of colour in your wardrobe. It instantly updates your look too. While not everyone is daringly bold with colours, those who love colours like I do will want to don a jacket or sheath in a bright, rich colour like crimson red or royal blue. Do not pair it with shoes and accessories in the same colour tone; matchy-matchy is not good! Your shoes and outfit will be fighting for attention, thus losing the focal point of your ensemble (see Kylie Minogue in blue dress and blue shoes). Fergie, of the Black Eye Peas does it right by wearing a silver-toned heels and letting her bright blue dress be the main attention.
Wearing brights with black shoes is always a safe choice but predictable, boring and too high contrast. I would suggest doing a nude heel like Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City). It looks more harmonious and also projects an updated look as nude shoes are the current trend.
