With the weather temperature rising, wearing shorts is an easy way to cool down. But it is always debatable when it comes to age appropriate shorts. This is my personal opinion: any hemline above the mid thigh is for the very young (teens to 20′s). Hemlines that are slightly above or at the knee would flatter any women above 50. Those in their 30′s and 40′s can wear hemlines at the mid thigh area or longer. Having established my point, let’s look at how women of all ages can wear this wardrobe staple. I find denim more forgiving than most other fabrics. Denim is made out of cotton, so it is suitable to be worn for all seasons. Its light to medium weight, flat and hard finishing helps to decrease size, hence making you appear taller and slimmer. Denim is also durable, versatile and readily available. As mentioned in my previous posts, you can team up denim with tailored pieces for a smart or casual business look. A jacket instantly smartens up a pair of denims. To appear leaner and taller, avoid cuffed hemlines (see denim for the 40′s) and horizontal washed lines at thigh area. Wear darker shade denims and straight cuts (for straight & angular body types) or slightly flared hem (for curvier body shapes). Add some fun into your wardrobe with denim shorts.

Shorts is the solution to conquer the crazy heat here and with summer beckoning, what could be more perfect than a pair of white shorts. It is not easy to find a pair of shorts with the most flattering length and cut, though. If you have great looking and toned thighs, there’s no reason for you to shy away from short shorts. As for the age factor, it is debatable but my personal opinion is if you are above 40 (unless you are JLo or Jennifer Anniston!), you can look desperately trying to look young. I repeat, this is just my personal take:-) Long legged or large hip women should preferably avoid shorts unless they wish to highlight them. Longer shorts would be more flattering for this body type. Wear fitted tops if you are wider at the bottom, otherwise a shapeless and baggy blouse would make your overall body look wider and bigger (see Kim K). Short and petite ladies look great in shorts (see Eva Longoria). Avoid cuffs at the hemline as this will further “shorten” your legs.

Do you know where to find a great pair of shops?

The high-waisted look is trendy for this summer. From casual denim to smart tailored shorts, wear them with a fitted top or billowy peasant blouse. High-waisted shorts are excellent for elongating the legs and to balance a longer upper torso (see photos below). It is also a great choice for your summer vacations in the tropics. But be careful if you are wider in the hips compared to the shoulders as the high-waisted shorts will emphasise your derriere and make your body look less proportionate. In this case, you may want to throw on a blazer to camouflage your hips.
