Just because you are a mom, it doesn’t give you the license to look frumpy and 10 years older! I know of working moms who do not have a child support system or have three kids and still look fabulous. When asked how they could still maintain their looks, a common reply was they set aside “me” time on a regular basis or at least a few times a month. Going to the spa once a month would do wonders for anyone or little things like reading a book, going out with girlfriends and having a manicure would elevate your state of wellness. Moms need to make efforts and little sacrifices for themselves too! Focus on yourself by setting aside an hour or two a week to pamper yourself with a home facial or anything that makes you happy. When you are refreshed and feeling good, you would be able to look at things more positively. Naturally, your body changes after childbirth and with all the commitment and time spent on looking after your babies, you would tire and start to feel insecure about your own body image. Hence, most moms would derail when it comes to their dressing especially for stay-home moms. Well, start throwing out your frumpy and comfy clothes and put on nice outfits to boost your confidence. I know most of you would be concern about your arms, tummy and thighs while trying to lose the pregnancy weight. During this period, some of the best styles to camouflage those areas and to highlight your pretty decolletage, upper rib cage and neck are:

Empire waist dresses and tops

Tops or dresses that bypass the waist (see above outfit for going to the spa)

V or U-shape necklines

Bell sleeves or soft cap sleeves

A-line or inverted pleated skirts

Printed tops (draws the eyes upwards and shifting away the focus on your tummy and thighs)

Soft flowing straight cut or bootleg pants

These design elements would flatter your body shape post pregnancy. Go treat yourself to a pretty outfit today!

What are your challenges when shopping for clothes post pregnancy?

Spring’s look is soft, fluid, feminine and romantic. Hence, the ruffled blouse is a staple look for spring. If you have soft curves, this style will suit you well. Can you wear ruffles to work? Absolutely! However, do pared it down with a fitted no fuss skirt or sleek trousers. Wearing a ruffled top with a frilly skirt will make you look frumpy, outdated and over-girlish for work. Keep ruffled printed tops for casual weekends if your workplace has a stricter dress code. A ruffled blouse is a good camouflage for smaller chested women and for the more well-endowed, choose a V or U-shape neckline with softer fabric to avid looking frumpy. If you are concerned that you may look too girlie for your comfort level, go for a crisp looking shirt with small ruffle detailing and pair it with men’s trousers.

Question is: Are you bikini ready? Well, if you are not, do not fret. You can still look fabulous in a one-piece swimsuit in the correct colour, fit and style. Besides comfort and functionality, you should select styles that fit your body shape. For example, vertical lines are always slimming and lengthening; and so are diagonal lines. Large floral prints and ruching are also good for camouflaging the tummy. A high leg cut will also give the illusion that your legs are miles long.

Asymmetric “Cleopatra” necklace by Rebecca Yam

One of the new trends to look out for in Spring 2010 is asymmetric fashion. Designers have incorporated the asymmetric features in their creations from one shoulder dresses and hemlines that are misproportionate to prints/ detailing that are concentrated on one side of the clothing. Asymmetric lines and shapes can be flattering and make an asymmetrical figure more balanced. The asymmetric body is camouflaged as more attention is drawn to the dramatic lines of the clothing.
